House approves bill on reviving ROTC

 The House of Representatives’ Committee on Basic Education and Culture on Wednesday approved a bill seeking to revive the mandatory Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) training for senior high school students in public and private schools throughout the country. The still unnumbered substitute bill was approved in only the panel’s second hearing following a motion to approve from one of the bill’s authors, Batangas Rep. Raneo Abu. The motion was carried without any objection. The panel’s approval came more than two months after President Rodrigo Duterte urged Congress to expedite the restoration of ROTC for senior high school students to instill patriotism and love of country among the youth. The bill, which aims to “instill patriotism, love of country, moral and spiritual virtues, respect for human rights and adherence to the Constitution,” is being supported by the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of National Defense (DND). House oks in legalization of Medical Marijuana

The House of Representatives on Tuesday approved on third and final reading a bill that would legalize and regulate the use of medical cannabis (marijuana) and expand research into marijuana’s medicinal properties. The lower House gave its final nod to House Bill (HB) No. 6517 with 163 votes. Five lawmakers voted on the negative while three lawmakers abstained during nominal voting. HB 6517’s approval came just two session days after it was approved on second reading last Wednesday, January 23. The proposed law seeks to help patients suffering from debilitating diseases and mandates the Department of Health (DOH) and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) to regulate medical cannabis. The proposed law would allow availability of medical cannabis to qualified patients with IDs to be issued by DOH. Destroy the Abu Sayaf tells Duterte to troops

President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the military to “destroy” the Abu Sayyaf group following the deadly blasts at a Roman Catholic cathedral in Jolo, Sulu on Sunday which left 21 people dead. Duterte visited Jolo on Monday to inspect the bombed Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cathedral and met with the relatives of the victims where he provided them financial assistance and vowed to give justice to their loved ones.
