DOH- EASTERN VISAYAS REPORTS A TOTAL OF 4,221 CASES OF DENGUE FEVER WITH NINE (9) DEATHS

The Department of Health- Eastern Visayas announces today a total of 4,221 dengue cases in the region with nine (9) deaths. This covers morbidity weeks 1-29 (January 1 to July18, 2020. The total number of cases is 52% lower compared to the same period last year which is 8,797 cases.
Of the total reported cases, 2,489 (58.96%) with warning signs, 1,712 (40.57%) with no warning signs, and 20 (0.47%) were severe cases. 3,684 cases of which or 87% were hospitalized. Our dengue cases age range from 8 months to 91 years old (median 12) and 52% or 2,195 are males.
The dengue cases in the region are distributed as follows: Majority of our reported cases come from the province of Leyte with a total of 2,160 cases (51.17%), 279 are from Tacloban City, 228 from Baybay City, and 158 from Ormoc City. The province of Southern Leyte has a total of 571 cases (13.53%) with 113 cases recorded in Maasin City. Currently, we have one (1) identified barangay (Brgy. Asuncion, Maasin City) with clustering of dengue cases. The Samar province has 521 cases (12.34%) with Calbayog City bearing the highest reported case in the province at 212. The Biliran province has 416 cases (9.86%) with 142 cases reported from Naval. The Eastern Samar has 283 cases (6.70%) with 65 cases recorded in Guiuan and Northern Samar province with 270 cases (6.40%), 48 of which were recorded in Catarman.
The nine (9) dengue case deaths were recorded from the following provinces/municipalities: (5) Leyte, one (1) each for the municipalities of Abuyog, La Paz, Ormoc City, Baybay and Tacloban City; (3) Eastern Samar, one (1) each for the municipalities of Giporlos, Arteche and General MacArthur; and one (1) from Tagapul-an, Samar.
“With the number of dengue cases recorded in the region, let us not be complacent. Along with our practice for the infection prevention and control measures for COVID-19, we also need to address the root causes of dengue and practice preventive measures all year round. I urge everyone to remain vigilant and continue to Search and destroy mosquito-breeding sites, employ Self-protection measures, Seek early consultation, and Support fogging/spraying only in the hotspot areas where an increase in cases is registered for two consecutive weeks to prevent and impending outbreak,” DOH- EV CHD Regional Director Molon appealed
