Tacloban, Tanauan and Burauen towns in Leyte province win big in Aliwan 2019

Tacloban City as well as Tanauan and Burauen towns in Leyte have topped in this year’s prestigious Aliwan Fiesta in Manila Saturday, April 27.

Tacloban bagged the best float design for three consecutive years, leading the city into the Hall of Fame awards.

The float, dubbed as "Tacloban Through the Years," and conceptualized and designed by artist-brothers Nick and Daniel Guarino, depicted the “upcoming events of international significance in Eastern Visayas whose regional capital is none other than the ‘City of the Happiest People in the World,’ the City of Tacloban.”

Made with indigenous embellishments, the float was divided into different sections and highlighted by the iconic San Juanico Bridge to symbolize “oneness” of Leyte and Samar islands.

The sections depicted the people's devotion to the Senor Sto. Niño de Tacloban and the upcoming 500th year of the birth of Christianity in the Philippines after the Spaniards landed in Limasawa Island in March 1521, the 75th anniversary of the Liberation Day through the return of US Army General Douglas Mac Arthur in October 20, 1944, and the “gains” of Tacloban after its devastation from the 2013 Super Typhoon Yolanda.

Tanauan’s Pasaka Festival was adjudged the grand champion in the festival dance category through its Pintados Kasadyaan Festival of the Province of Leyte, while Tribu Buraburon of Burauen got the second place through its Buraburon Festival.

“Words are not enough how truly proud Mayor Pel and I are of our Pasaka contingent! Congratulations! You have brought honor and glory to our beloved town of Tanauan and the Province of Leyte. What you have done will be remembered forever,” wrote Penelope Tecson, the wife of Tanauan Mayor Pel Tecson, as she congratulated the 500-strong contingent from their town.

The Pasaka Festival street dance performance featured “the culture of Tanauan, faith in the Almighty, and our resiliency to face life’s adversities, the true spirit of Pasaka,” according to Mayor Tecson.

Aliwan Fiesta, an annual gathering of the country’s most popular cultural festivals, was organized by the Manila Broadcasting Company together with the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Star City, and in cooperation with the cities of Pasay and Manila.

Ejercito: Passage of bill granting civil service eligibility to SK kagawads

Senator Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito on Thursday urged lawmakers to pass the measure that seeks to grant civil service eligibility to Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) councilors. Ejercito, in filing Senate Bill No. 2185, or the bill that seeks to amend the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Reform Act of 2015 (Republic Act No. 10742), said he believed youth councilors should also be granted civil service eligibility. The senator noted that under the present law, SK councilors are not included in the list of Elective Barangay Officials to be provided or granted with first level eligibility under the Civil Service Rules. He said that based on the Civil Service Rules, a Barangay Official Eligibility, which is equivalent to Career Service Sub-professional Eligibility, is a privilege granted to barangay officials, including SK chairpersons. He said the bill “seeks to grant the same, if not more fitting privilege to SK kagawads, recognizing them also as barangay elected officials.” “Through the SK Ref...
