As Filipinos throughout the country observe Holy Week or Semana Santa, Director Artemio Caneja of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG)-Regional Office VIII reminds all local chief executives (LCEs) in Eastern Visayas to ensure a safe and peaceful commemoration of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Regional Director Caneja revealed that DILG Secretary Eduardo Año has directed LCEs to mobilize traffic and law enforcers, barangay tanods, Barangay Peacekeeping Action Teams (BPATs), public safety officers and other force multipliers in churches, religious and tourist destinations, local and national roads, and in crime-prone areas.
According to Caneja, this could be facilitated with the LCEs convening their respective Local Peace and Order Councils to plan, anticipate and prepare for the heavy influx of people from various places.
The DILG-8 Regional Director further said that safety and security must be stressed at sea and airports, transportation terminals, pilgrimage sites, churches, markets, travel destinations and public places through close coordination by local government units (LGUs) with the Philippine National Police, the Bureau of Fire Protection and other security and safety authorities.
LGUs should likewise mobilize all resources in garbage collection and disposal, and conduct clean-up operations of public places to assure the cleanliness and orderliness of their place.
